Friday 5 for January 6: Animate

The Chinese New Year this year is on January 28th. On New Year’s Day, MomZ, DadZ, Charlie and I went to see Rogue One and had Chinese for dinner. Between the four of us, and not using Google, none of us could remember when Chinese New Year was. I said February. Someone else said soon. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My actual Chinese Zodiac sign is the Rat, as I was born in 1984. The rat symbolizes wisdom in Chinese astrology. I think that fits, to a certain extent. But I’ll always think of Templeton the Rat from Charlotte’s Web when I think about being a rat.

1. In what ways are you like an ox?
represents of diligence
Pro: hard working, honest, creative, ambitious, cautious, patient and handle things steadily.
Con: stubborn, narrow-minded, indifferent, prejudiced, slow and not good at communication.

Ask just about anyone who knows me in real life, and they’ll tell you I’m as stubborn as an ox.

2. In what ways are you like a rabbit?
represents longevity, discretion and good luck.
Pro: kind-hearted, friendly, intelligent, cautious, skillful, gentle, quick and live long. They dislike fighting and like to find solutions through compromise and negotiation.
Con: potential to be superficial, stubborn, melancholy and overly-discreet.

I’m conflict-avoidant and like to think that I’m pretty good at negotiating. At the same time, I’m stubborn (see above) and prone to melancholia.

3. In what ways are you like a snake?
represents pliability.
Pro: wise, discreet, agile, attractive and full of sympathy.
Con: tendency for them to be lazy, greedy, arrogant and indulging in self-admiration.

I’m not sure how snakes can be full of sympathy, but that’s pretty representative of me.

4. In what ways are you like a goat?
Pro: polite, mild mannered, shy, imaginative, determined and have good taste.
Con: sometimes pessimistic, unrealistic, short-sighted and slow in behavior.

I like to think I have impeccable taste. Especially when it comes to my love of Ranch dressing on buttered noodles.

5. In what ways are you like a rooster?
represents fidelity and punctuality
Pro: beautiful, kind-hearted, hard-working, courageous, independent, humorous and honest. They like to keep home neat and organized.
Con: they might be arrogant, self-aggrandizing, persuasive to others and wild as well as admire things or persons blindly.

Definitely not punctual (ask K), but I’m working on it. Definitely not neat and orderly at home (ask Charlie), but we’re working on it. And of the cons, the best that can be said for me is that I think I’m pretty persuasive.

Friday 5 for December 30: Forward

It’s been, what — 17 jillion years since I did a Friday5? Let’s remedy that.

It’s the end of the year, and I still think I’ll do the end-of-the-year survey meme, since I was quiet on the blog front, and a whole lotta shit happened in 2016. But for now, this will suffice.

  1. What are you looking forward to in your personal life in 2017?
I’m looking forward to deepening my lady friendships, and to also finally shed the excess I-hate-my-job-and-I’m-stressed-all-the-time weight.
  2. What’s something you’re planning ahead for?
Just the day-to-day stuff at the moment. Though a thought that keeps flitting into my head is what the summer Family Vacation will be. Last year, I missed most of it. I’d like to repeat the Dedrick’s Take Dillon Vacation, but I’d also like to see the Ziffels Hike Ohiopyle, too.
  3. How intense is your to-do list for the last days of the year?
Not at all. With Charlie home for Winter Break, he’s had a few things done, one of which has been knocking the IKEA RAST Nighstand Project off the list. I also need to do Round 2 of going through all of the Old Job detritus I hauled home when I left, but that’s a smaller task.
  4. What’s something you’d like to jump past, between now and the end of the year?
I’d like to get out of New Year’s Eve festivities, if I could get away with it. I love the company I’ll keep (my in-laws), but I’d really rather just be snug in bed and passed out when the ball drops.
  5. How will you ring in the new year?
As mentioned, probably dinner, games and ball-dropping with my in-laws at the Wee House. Would rather be asleep.

Friday 5 for March 22, 2013: Lasts

I wish I didn’t feel all the time that I was using home-buying as an excuse for everything. Didn’t get my laundry done? Sorry: buying a house! Didn’t return your email? Sorry: buying a house! Didn’t put on pants today? Sorry: buying a house!

So, that said, I haven’t been updating or doing any sort of website staging, because – and I don’t know if you’re aware of this – but I’m buying a house. By the way, here’s my sage wisdom on the topic, from all of my experience. Do you like shitloads of paperwork, and near-diarrhea-inducing amounts of stress? In that case, might I suggest buying a house?

On the upside, in a short bit of reprieve from the mortgage madness, I’m bringing Charlie as my date to a marrieds-type get-together at a high school friend’s house with some other high school friends and their respective husband-types. This is the kind of thing I’ve been looking forward to since I graduated high school; I’m just starting 10 years late….

Please, sit, have a glass of iced tea and enjoy some Friday5 while I wish for Springtime for Cleveland (and Germany)/Winter for Poland and France.

  1. At a gathering of your usual social group, who’s almost certain to show up last?
Despite the fact that it makes me insane that I am this way, I can usually be counted on to be the last if we are meeting at a restaurant. I have bad Get-Together Fu that way.
  2. Of chores that must be done this weekend, which will you probably complete last, and why?
Probably packing for our move. I’ve been putting it off all year. Why stop now?
  3. Some TV remote controls have a “last” button. If you were to turn your TV on now and hit the “last” button on the remote, which channel would you be taken to?
The TV is usually set to “3” so I can run the PS3 to stream Netflix/AMZ Prime. Before that, I was watching Bravo (about the only channel I watch anymore).
  4. Your task is to try one scoop of ice cream per day until every one of thirty-one flavors is consumed. Which do you save for last?
Either strawberry or chocolate, because they are both friggin’ gross.  …Unless it’s Queen City Cayenne, in which case, I save it for last because it’s brutal to get through something so cold and so, so hot.
  5. When did you last have an awful meal in a restaurant?
Sunday morning, March 17, 2013. The restaurant was disgusting, the service rotten, the clientele repulsive, and my hangover unrelenting. But, the company was wonderful, the whole evening magnificent, and the hot, buttery grits I ordered to soothe my drunk were glorious.

NaBloPoMo’12: Friday 5 for November 23, 2012 – Black

I did not do any Black Friday shopping this year. It seemed a little tacky that some places opened at midnight to cram shoppers in, so I opted out with a therapy session in the morning, and lunch with the Stribz and Charlie in the afternoon at No. 1 Pho.

In Speckle news, she’s been around to the point where I didn’t even need a live trap to catch her, I was able to pick  her up and bring her in. She got a good bill of health at the vet and is going to go for shots tomorrow. She is such a sweet, mellow thing.

I wish I could keep her; but with Roxie and Reese right now, there’s no way I can take a third cat. I am carefully vetting adoptive parents for her though, rather than just dropping her at the Humane Society.

As I type this, she’s zonked out on my lap from playing kitten games all day.

I’m looking forward to telling you a happy story about where Speckle will be living forever.

Onwards! To the Friday5!

  1. What’s your favorite black article of clothing?
I have a lot of black clothing, it’s pretty much the staple of my wardrobe. But right now, my favorite piece that I’m wearing all the time are  by black platform boots that go with my dresses and most of my skirts.
  2. What’s the best black food?
Of the foods that I can think of, blackberries are at the top of the list.
  3. How did you pass the time during your most recent extended blackout (power outage)?
It was at work, when randomly, half the block went out. Before they released us, I sat by my office window and read a book on my iPad, then I went with the Knuckleheads to the atrium and had lunch with them.
  4. When did you last play blackjack?
    Ages and ages ago.
  5. What are some songs in your iTunes (or other media player) whose titles contain the word black?
    Strong Black Vine, Tori Amos
    Black Star, Radiohead
    Supermassive Black Hole, Muse
    Black Mud, The Black Keys
    Black Tongue, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    Black Like Me, Spoon
    Black Cadillacs, Modest Mouse
White Men in Black Suits, Everclear
    Black, Pearl Jam
Spin the Black Circle, Pearl Jam

NaBloPoMo’12: Friday 5 for November 16, 2012 – I’m Trying to Preposition You

Busy Friday. :/

Let’s Friday5 instead, shall we?

  1. What’s something that’s better on the rocks?
    Dewar’s, or so I’m told.
  2. Whose behavior has been beyond belief?
    No one’s that I can think of…
  3. In what way do you color outside the lines?
I definitely dance to the beat of my own drum most of the time. You can ask anyone I know.
  4. When were you recently relieved to be in the clear?
I had a due date for a paper pushed back. That was pretty awesome.
  5. What seems to have disappeared without a trace?
My motivation to finish this dang semester, that’s for sure.

NaBloPoMo’12: Friday 5 for November 9, 2012 – TV Sitcoms

Some notes:

  • Skyfall was awesome, but surprisingly sexless.
  • Love taking the train downtown. Next time, we’ll have to wander farther from Tower City.
  • Some ladies were definitely over-dressing for karaoke at Noodlecat. Being the casual-type girl I am (in cowboy boots and plaid shirt last night), I have a hard time justifying getting super-gussied-up for a night of casual drinking.
  • Binkles and I decided that we want to try The Grotto when there’s more positive cash flow.

Let’s Friday5 , shall we?

  1. When was someone or something recently Too Close for Comfort?
Someone I know knows that I have a “personal bubble” thing, so he was all up in it the other day, and I was muy incómodo.
  2. Besides yourself, who’s recently been in Double Trouble?
No one that I can think of, unfortunately.
  3. What’s Happening?
Lately? Trying to play catch up.
  4. Who’s the Boss?
I keep telling both K and Charlie that they are not the boss of me, but there are times where I think I should just hand the responsibility over to them. Let them manage all of this. ::makes gesture around self::
  5. What are you most likely to be up to from 9 to 5 tomorrow?
Working on my ever-burgeoning to-do list, and if I’m very, very good, I’ll get some pleasure writing in.

NaBloPoMo’12: Friday 5 for November 12, 2012 – Dreaming

I’ve had quite a day. I’d like to pretend it never happened, but what good would that do me? Wishes and hands and whatnot….

Let’s Friday5 instead, shall we?

  1. If you suddenly received a ton of money and could open up some kind of store or service just for the pleasure of having it (assume it wouldn’t have to be too financially successful!), what would it be?
I would have an art gallery in a heartbeat, which would also house rentable studios in the back for artists to create their work, as well as hosting classes and consortiums for artists and lay people to learn different techniques, and for budding artists to learn the tools of the business side of the trade. Maybe in the next iteration of my life, I will do that.
  2. What service or store that no longer exists do you miss most?
I miss having the cafeteria service at my school. It was nice to have someone cook meals for me and do the dishes afterword, all while I met and hung out with friends.
  3. What local business do you think you could make better if you were to take it over? And if you don’t mind sharing, what changes would you make?
Locally? I dunno, there’s an uber-conservative coffee shop downtown that I would turn into a more beatnik bookstore cafe, I guess…. My neighborhood doesn’t have a lot of decent local-business type businesses.
  4. What spot nearby seems to be impossible for businesses to survive in?
In Charlie’s neighborhood, a new shopping plaza was built, and one of the anchors in one of the sections originally was a Donatos, which didn’t last, and then a coffee shop, which also didn’t survive. There’s a definite feeling to the place that it would take a very lucrative business to survive there.
  5. We’ve all seen stores that combined books and records, beer and laundry, or coffee and whatever. One of my favorite places to get coffee in Honolulu is a cafe and florist, and there is a car garage that’s also a diner in a town nearby. What would be a cool hybrid of two disparate ideas for somewhere you’d like to hang out?
Oh, the beer and laundry thing sounds totally awesome!  Gun shop and bar sounds like bad news bears…. Bowling alley and restaurant, maybe? Clothes boutique and martini bar? Hmmm…I’m drawing a blank on this one.
